The Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Green Building Rating System developed by the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) encourages and accelerates global adoption of sustainable green building and development practices through the creation and implementation of universally understood and accepted tools and performance criteria. LEED focuses on sustainable sites, water efficiency, energy and atmosphere, materials and resources, indoor environmental qualtity, innovation and design process. To qualify, an applicant for a LEED project must submit an application to the USGBC demonstrating documented compliance with the requirements in the rating system. Depending on the category and number of points, the project is awarded LEED certification in one of four levels: Platinum, Gold, Silver, or Certified.
